About Us
“We learn from the land and the people who have tended it for generations. At SLG, we believe true sustainability begins by honoring indigenous knowledge and working hand in hand with local communities.”
Sankhuwasabha Learning Ground (SLG)
"Sustainable Futures Through Indigenous Wisdom, Nature, Culture and Local Action."
Sankhuwasabha Learning Grounds (SLG) is a profit-not-distributing company (Reg. No. 146548/072/073), officially affiliated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal since 2017 (Affiliation No. 49464). SLG operates in the remote and ecologically rich areas of Bhotkhola and Makalu Rural Municipalities of Sankhuwasabha District, Eastern Nepal. Our organization is dedicated to promoting sustainable development through integrated approaches in agriculture, ecotourism, cultural preservation, and livelihood support.
Sankhuwasabha Learning Grounds (SLG) is a community-rooted organization dedicated to sustainable rural development in the highlands of Eastern Nepal. Operating primarily in Bhotkhola and Makalu Rural Municipalities of Sankhuwasabha District, SLG aims to strengthen indigenous knowledge systems, ecological integrity, and economic resilience.
Sankhuwasabha Learning Grounds (SLG) collaborate closely with farmers, youth, women’s groups, local governments, and indigenous communities to ensure inclusive growth that honors both tradition and innovation.
Under the Cultivation Through Permaculture System, SLG has procured over 600 ropani of land—150 ropani in Makalu and 450 ropani in Bhotkhola—for the establishment of community learning grounds. These hubs focus on the conservation of native seeds, organic farming practices, and sustainable land use. We conduct hands-on training workshops for local farmers, promote branding and organic certification of local products, and support the formation of farmer groups. The program also includes the production of organic fertilizers, livestock farming, grazing management, and the establishment of revolving trust funds to sustain agricultural development.
In the area of Ecotourism and Bio-Cultural Heritage Conservation, SLG is revitalizing the Lungbasama tourism trail through eco-trail maintenance, construction of porter shelters and campsites, and development of homestay and goth stay infrastructure. We also organize nature guide trainings and promote local yak products like cheese and butter. A major focus is placed on preserving indigenous languages and scripts such as Sambota Lipi (Bhote, Thudame, Nawa), along with traditional cultures, rituals, and customary laws. Our efforts include establishing a museum and tourism information center, and recognizing biodiversity zones such as Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Golden Duck, and Blue Sheep habitats.
Our Livelihood Support and Promotion component aims to strengthen the local economy through the cultivation and conservation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs). We support MAP farmers with seeds, seedlings, and essential oil distillation units, while also assisting in processing, branding, marketing, and organic certification. SLG documents and publishes indigenous knowledge, including traditional food, farming methods, handmade products, and healing systems practiced by Aamchis, Baidhes, Shamans, and Lamas.
To ensure sustainability, SLG places strong emphasis on Capacity Building, Networking, and Coordination. We conduct regular DPAC/MPAC meetings, social audits, and participatory project monitoring. A permanent SLG office and learning center is planned at the district headquarters to serve as a central hub for coordination. We facilitate leadership and program management training, permaculture education, and exposure visits. In collaboration with local governments and the District Coordination Committee (DCC), we are establishing disaster risk management funds and recruiting technical experts in agriculture and veterinary services. A dedicated vehicle will also be procured to support field activities across the region.
At SLG, our work is deeply rooted in local values and driven by the belief that true transformation comes from within communities. By blending indigenous knowledge with innovative approaches, we are fostering resilient ecosystems, empowered communities, and a sustainable future for the people of Sankhuwasabha.
